It’s Not Too Late To Attend the Science Olympiad Training Conference!

     The 2017-18 Oklahoma Science Olympiad Training Conference is this Saturday.  It is not to late to be a part of this valuable training.  Registration is open through Thursday at  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SO2018Training
     We will start promptly at 8 AM with introductions and housekeeping and a glimpse at the 2017 National Tournament at Wright State University as experienced by our 2017 State Champion teams from Casady School.  All participants will be together for the morning sessions as we will review the events that have both a Division B and Division C version.
     Presentations are approximately 15 minutes in length and present a quick overview of the events in terms of expectations and scoring.  Most of the presenters are the event supervisors for these events and some will be available to work with students at the Student Training Conference November 4th (more on this event at the conference).
     We will have a working lunch (provided) where Coaches will participate in a panel discussion featuring three experienced coaches who will offer advice and insight into the Science Olympiad coaching process as well as be available for questions.  Non-coaching Event Supervisors will also have a working lunch where the discussion will focus of the art and science of event supervising and mentoring as well as Science Olympiad policies and procedures.
     After lunch we will divide into groups based upon Divisions.  These event presentations will concentrate on those events that are exclusive to Division B and to Division C.

Get Ready for the Tournaments…

This season there are 4 Science Olympiad Tournaments scheduled across Oklahoma.  The first 3 are termed “Invitational” in that all member teams of the Oklahoma Science Olympiad are invited to attend and compete. These are typically full-day affairs that give students the opportunity to practice and perfect their skills before the State Tournament in March.
  • Norman Invitational – Washington Irving Middle School, December 2nd
  • Putnam City Invitational – Putnam City North High School, January 27th
  • Southeastern Oklahoma State University Invitational, February 24th
  • State Tournament – University of Central Oklahoma, March 31st

  • In addition, we are planning a training conference on November 4th at UCO for Science Olympiad participants.  Event Supervisor/Mentors for a number of events will conduct workshops for and with students to assist them with events.  Not all events will be offered, but we are working to have volunteer mentors to offer guidance and instruction for many of the construction and problem solving events.  Details and registration to follow after the training conference in September.

Yes, It’s time to start the 2017-18 edition of the Oklahoma Science Olympiad.

1st – Begin by enrolling your team(s) in the Science Olympiad.  This year we are once again waiving the state fee for Science Olympiad membership.  That will reduce the cost of annual membership to $60 per team, which is the national Science Olympiad fee.  Remember that only paid member teams can compete in Science Olympiad tournaments.  Each team can bring no more that 15 students to tournament.  Please consult the Science Olympiad rules for additional details as to grade requirements for Division B and Division C teams as there are restrictions and limitations.

The swap meet at the 2017 Science Olympiad Finals at Wright State University.

2nd – Register to attend the annual Oklahoma Science Olympiad training conference on September 23rd at the University of Central Oklahoma in Howell Hall.  This is a FULL DAY (8 AM – 4 PM) training for coaches and event supervisors.  We review each and every one of the 23 events in Division B and in Division C as well as have sessions specific to Science Olympiad Coaches and Olympiad Event Supervisors.  The workshop is free and lunch is provided!

TROY HIGH SCHOOL AND DANIEL WRIGHT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS CROWNED CHAMPIONS AT 33rd ANNUAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD NATIONAL TOURNAMENT; CHICAGO-AREA DANIEL WRIGHT BACK-TO-BACK WINNER

DAYTON, Ohio — Student teams from Troy High School in Fullerton, California, and Daniel Wright Junior High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois, took top honors at the 33rd Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament at Wright State University on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

“We are proud of the achievements of these winning teams and know their schools and communities will welcome them home like champions,” said Dr. Gerard Putz, Science Olympiad president and co-founder. “These students and teachers exemplify the best America has to offer in science, technology, engineering and math.”

One of the nation’s most prestigious science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions, Science Olympiad brings together 120 winning middle school and high school teams advancing from state-level competitions this spring. Rigorous hands-on and lab events led by experts from government agencies, top universities, industry and Science Olympiad state chapters cover topics in robotics, physics, epidemiology, astronomy, chemistry, meteorology, coding and engineering. Winners of the Science Olympiad will be offered scholarships to Wright State. All official members of the first- place team in Division B and Division C will receive a $2,500 scholarship, renewable for four years. In both divisions, the university will also award $1,000 scholarships to the first-place winners of each individual event, also renewable for four years. All awards are subject to admission requirements.

Teams from North Bethesda Middle School in Bethesda, Maryland, and Chattahoochee High School in Johns Creek, Georgia, earned the 2017 Lockheed Martin Spirit Award (including $2,000 for their team), which recognizes schools whose team members exhibit exemplary sportsmanship, teamwork, team spirit and respect that exemplify the spirit of Science Olympiad competition. In addition, Mentor High School from Mentor, Ohio, and Baker Middle School in Troy, Michigan, won the DuPont Team Enterprise Awards, recognizing a breakout performance by a team at the National Tournament.

The Oklahoma Science Olympiad State Tournament

UCO plays host once again to the Science Olympiad State Tournament.  Teams representing public and private middle and high schools from across Oklahoma will engage in competition over the range of 46 STEM events in 2 divisions. The individual tournament events are produced by Event Supervisors who are themselves engaged in  STEM professions or who are STEM undergraduate and graduate students at UCO, OSU and OU.  The STEM professionals include professors and researchers at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, Rose State College, Oklahoma Mesonet, and the University of Central Oklahoma.

For the past 33 years, Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education. What began as a grassroots assembly of science teachers is now one of the premier science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to 7,600 teams in 50 states. Science Olympiad’s ever-changing line-up of events in all STEM disciplines exposes students to practicing scientists and career choices, and energizes classroom teachers with a dynamic content experience.

The March 25th tournament will identify the Middle School team and the High School team that will each represent Oklahoma in the National Science Olympiad Tournament at Wright State University in May.

 

Winter is the Time for Invitationals

2017 started off with the  Putnam City Invitational Tournament at Putnam City North on January 21st.  23 Division B teams and 9 Division C teams from across the state met at PCN in Oklahoma City for the first tournament of the new year.

The next Invitational Tournament is February 18th in Durant, Oklahoma at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.  This is a great tournament that will bring teams from across Oklahoma and a couple of teams from North Texas.  SEOSU is a great host and the faculty is “all in” to provide a great experience and a challenging competition.
